A canvas is a group of documents that have been temporarily put in one place so that the AI tools can work on them. Opus 2's AI features use canvases for two purposes:

  1. AI Analysis: Adding documents or transcripts to a canvas performs a batch analysis on the documents in that canvas before you look at them. When you are then ready to use AI Analysis, you don't have to wait on your documents being analysed.
  2. AI Workbench: Defines a specific document set to be used by AI Workbench. ONLY the documents in the chosen canvas section are analysed by the Workbench and entities are extracted (characters, organisations, events).
Note: You do not need to add a document to a canvas in order to perform AI analysis on it. The AI Analysis tool can be accessed directly from any document in your project. The canvas feature allows you to put larger sets of documents through an analysis in advance of when you want to access them.

Prerequisites

To use the AI Workbench,  the feature must be enabled by Opus 2 Platform Support.

Creating a canvas

  1. In the Documents page, select the + symbol next to Canvases in the sidebar, provide a name,  and select an optional colour for the canvas.

  1. Select Save.
  2. To edit or delete a canvas, use the 3-dot kebab menu alongside the canvas name.

Adding sections within a canvas

You may wish to subdivide the set of documents within the canvas.

To create a section, do the following:

  1. Right-click on the 3-dot kebab menu next to your chosen canvas and select Add section.
  2. Enter a name for your section and an optional colour.

Adding documents to a canvas or canvas section

  1. Select the documents to be added to a canvas/canvas section by selecting the checkboxes alongside the documents.
  2.  Drag the draggable selection counter over to the chosen canvas or canvas section as shown:

  1. Alternatively, after having selected your documents, select the Actions dropdown menu and select Add to canvas.

Automated analysis of canvas documents

An empty canvas has a grey circle. As soon as you add documents to a canvas, an orange semi-circle indicates that the documents are being analysed. A green circle with a check indicates that all the documents in that canvas are ready. Orange and green are the only two statuses.

To see details of the canvas analysis, single click on the orange/green circle; select Close when you have finished:

It is recommend that users wait for 15 - 20 minutes for entity extraction (characters, organisations, events) to take place on the documents in a canvas before reviewing any extracted entities from a single document that is part of the same canvas.

You don't have to wait for the entire number of documents in the canvas to be processed in order to work with those documents on an individual basis using Single document analysis.

Note: You cannot re-analyse a document. However if the analysis gets interrupted or stuck for any reason, select the orange circle and then select Run analysis to try again.
Tip: Due to AWS Bedrock processing limitations, if you have a large number of documents that you want to analyse, performing an AI analysis on a batch of documents can take several hours (approximately 6-7 hours for 50 documents) so we recommend populating canvases so that the documents can be analysed overnight. In the meantime you can still access a single document from that canvas and perform Single document analysis on it.
